Peter (if I may):Burghley's atlas (Royal MS 18 D III) does contain other MS maps. For example, there is an MS map of Worcestershire (f. 58b-59) onto which Burghley has added (around the margin and on the map itself) the names of various people, among them a number of known or suspected Catholics, church papists, etc. So there are 4 references to residences of the Littleton family; two to Sheldon's residences; John Throckmorton's residence; Gilbert Talbot's, Sir William Catesby's, etc. Catesby was an active supporter of the Jesuit mission and harborer of Edmund Campion. Talbot, Sheldon, and Throckmorton were all named in the priest Hugh Hall's examination of Dec. 31, 1583; Hall claimed that he had held mass at Sheldon's house and had "resided 14 years with Mr. John Talbot, Sir John Throckmorton, Lord Windsor, and Mr. Sheldon" (CSPD 1581-90: 142). Interestingly, in the list of the JPs for the county (f. 57b), Burghley has placed a black cross only to the left of Sheldon's name.Again, I've written about some of this for my dissertation, hence my familiarity with the material.I hope this is helpful.Eric Johnson-DeBaufre----- Original Message -----From: [email protected]: Tuesday, May 24, 2011 12:16 pmSubject: [MapHist] Re: Lord Burghley's Maps & Crypto-CatholicismTo: [email protected]> This is a MapHist list message (when you hit 'reply' you're > replying to the whole list)> o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + > o + o + o + > >
