Dear André,

Thanks for the recommendation.
Yes, wiki commons is on my list.
One has to be careful though. Sometimes I've found images that seem to still
fall under European
copyright rules, but not North American ones. A few people,( very few),
on wiki play a little loose with the rules. I have a lawyer advising me,
so that will help. Plus, this venture falls under the educational heading.
That should buy me less rage if I mess up.

All, if you haven't seen the list of cartographers on Wikipedia, it's a great
place for beginners
to see a quick list of the masters.

Thanks again,
Heather

One good place to go to would be Wikimedia Commons. It started out as the
media repository for Wikipedia, and still functions as such, but nowadays
also acts as a general repository with over 11 million images, all of them
either out of copyright or under a free license (usually CC-BY or CC-BY-SA).
To search for cartographers, go to
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Cartographers. Many of the links
only lead to maps of the cartographers, but several others also have photos,
drawings or paintings depicting the cartographers. Likewise
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Explorers for explorers.
