Good grief! I just joined the list and already I think I know the answer to
one of the questions, so I can't resist.
If you have some points on your raster image that can be used to register
the image- open it as a MapInfo table using File>Open Table, then select
Raster Image. Select the image file- and tell MapInfo you want to register,
not just display it. Nominate the projection, then register as many control
points as you can- this helps put your picture in good alignment with your
map. I have used successfully this for aerial photos, and also for scanned
pictures of maps. Your pictures appear as the bottom map layers. You can
only view one picture at a time, unless you have a series of pictures for
different parts of the map- such as a series of aerial pix covering a broad
map area. In that case, their edges cover each other, but you can see most
of them.
BTW- I am a former student of Ian Johnson, author of Understanding MapInfo,
which got a justifiably positive mention in the list recently. He's at the
University of Sydney, Archaeology Dept. The above information is from my
well-thumbed, pencilled and highlighted copy of his book, which has seen me
through several years of archaeological research. I use MapInfo 5, and
although his book was written for MapInfo 4, I have no probs extrapolating
the info to any new MapInfo features.
