Wow! What a response to my recent request looking for resources to assist with mapping the route of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay. I had heaps of responses from all over Australia and the world. Wales-Canada-India-Solomon Islands-Germany and the US to name a few. My request may have opened a can of worms, since volunteers need to be 'signed in' to the SOCOG "Volunteers 2000" program, and the appropriate Confidentiality Agreements signed. But there must be a way for each of you to be involved! I'm now redefining which aspects of the mapping may be done without the need to be present in Sydney for the paperwork. When I've reassessed how I can use the MapInfo users around the world to assist, I will broadcast again. Adrian Walls and others are on the right track with the idea to use my request as an exercise in Remote Networking via FTP etc. I will develop this further. MapInfo Australia has been very useful in providing contact details of Universities around Sydney that may have MapInfo skills a little closer to our headquarters. Many of the responses offered suggestions and ideas - thank you for each of these. One common theme was the potential for GPS to show where the Torch was at any point in time. In practice we know where the Torch is at any point in time on any of the 120 days of the Relay, so a GPS telling us that the Torch is behind the Media Van and in front of the Command Vehicle is of little benefit. However, I'm open to ideas of how we will track where the Torchbearer Shuttle Buses are at any point in time. Have they left the Collection Point? How far are they from reaching the last drop off and so on. If people have ideas how the Convoy Manager can look at her notebook computer whilst on the move and see where all of the shuttle buses are at any time would be useful. (By the way, we will not have a fixed wing aircraft in the sky to relay the GPS signal.) So a big thank you for all your kind offers, I will try to involve those who offered their services in the future. For those people in Australia with access to cadastral data, I'm very interested in what you may have to offer regarding the construction of Celebration Stage Maps...
