I couldn't get MapInfo to crash under this scenario. Then I tried it again, 
holding down the left mouse button on the "edit" check-box of any layer in 
the Layer Control dialog, and hit "Esc".

Sure enough -- MapInfo goes "bye-bye" and Dr. Watson says "Hello." I see 
this problem happen often enough trying to print to Adobe Acrobat, except 
then you don't even get a visit from the Dr.
