Nah, Dan's "HAHAHA" is a legitimate point. Data, data everywhere
--and FREE!-- but always out of reach of the poor end-user. The
answer is that data translators are either opportunities for
third-party software-development consultants like thee and me who
need to harvest a few clams, or pro-bono projects for user groups
humming with excess energy (like MapInfo-L) to tackle.
see http://www.ctmap.com/gisnet/catalog/sw/dlg-mif.html for $95
DLG translator.
For SDTS/MapInfo translators, here's the relevant excerpt from
Charlie Hickman's post from this morning on c.i.g.:
The SDTS tutorial and translator documents are at
http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/sdts/warning.html
and the translator document is directly at
ftp://sdts.er.usgs.gov/pub/sdts/articles/ascii/translators.txt
with a section on how to convert SDTS DLG data to MapInfo format.
For SDTS vector data, including SDTS DLG data, there are a number
of
translators, including
GeoMorph
http://www.active-ware.com/geo/index.html
GIS Tools
http://www.gistools.com/
Safe FME
http://www.safe.com/
and likely Global Geomatics in the near future as John noted.
Vertical Mapper software
http://www.northwoodgeo.com/
adds SDTS raster (DEM) capabilities to MapInfo.
Additional SDTS information is on the web at
http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/sdts/
and questions can be sent to the SDTS experts at
