for anyone who is interested I had a small dos program written in "C".  what
it does is use the command line pkzip to uncompress each file then convert
them to dem's using the dos based converter from the usgs.  it does one
after another and  cleans up all extra files it creates during
de-compression etc.  If anyone wants it let me know.  If you had a few
thousand files you could just let it run overnite.
