But to make sure you don't lose your "settings" the two important
files to make REGULAR backups of are Windows\user.dat and
Windows\System.dat. This is the lair of the mysterious Windows
Registry, and if your programs start forgetting where they put
their components, this is what got hosed.
There's a great O'Reilly book called "Windows Annoyances" that
tells you all about this and how to recover from Windows. It also
goes into how you can get rid of annoying icons (like MSN) and
utilities that Micorsoft wants to shove down your throat. You 'd
be amazed at how much open disk space you get when you clean out
all the bits you don't need. The web page for "Annnoyances"

subjects, too.
