Hello all,
I am considering purchasing a new PC, probably a workstation for use
with MapInfo in the future. There are a few things I would like to
straighten out in my mind before thinking about configuring my system
requirements.
1) MapInfo is not capable of utilizing the full potential dual Pentium
based PC... true or false?
2) Which Chip would be better: Pentium III 600 Mhz 512k L2 cache,
Pentium II Xenon 400 Mhz 2 Mb L2 cache, Pentium III Xenon 500 Mhz 1 Mb
L2 cache?
Obviously a dual Pentium 600 Mhz will cost far less than a Xenon 400 Mhz
with 2 Mb cache but would I get the performance benefits out of both
chips.
3) Will MapInfo run faster (i.e., total time of operation for a given
task), with access to more cache or a faster chip. If I have to do a
lot of database crunching on small bits of info wouldn't the cache help
out more than the extra clock speed. After all running out to the
motherboard and then the HD to retrieve that extra 512k or 1.5 Mb of
data that could have been cached will slow things down running at the
motherboards speed (currently) 100 Mhz, won't it?
I am also going to be running Corel Draw 9 on this system as well as
Vertical Mapper, multimedia, video conferencing, 3D graphics, internet,
etc.
I would like any suggestions,
Stan Johnston
