As a frequent exponent of the virtues of pdf... I have found version 3 to
be perfectly adequate and until MI bought out proviewer we used it as a our
free viewer. I agree with James Marlow that raster printing can be a bit
raggedy this is because of the use by Adobe of JPEG compression to help in
file size reduction, however with 3 and 4 using distiller and adjusting the
settings if you choose zip as the compression method rasters print in far
better clarity.
It is a great tool wether you want to supply maps by electronic means
allowing the user the choice of printing or not.
Also check out Jam Buddy from Avenza which is able to extend the function
of the pdf file by allowing users to access the underlying attribute data
by the use of a sort of info tool button
