Greetings all: I'm using the "STATES.TAB" file that came with MapInfo. I've added a field, and now I'm trying to "Update" that field from a .DBF file exported from Excel. The .DBF has only the states' names and a field of text data. The Update Column dialog would only allow me to Calculate a "Count", not update the blank field from the data in the .DBF based on a join of state names Closing and reopening tables; packing the tables; copying the tables and using the copies; re-ordering the records; ...etc., did not help. The workaround seems to be to add another field to the two field .DBF file. I added another column and "Updated" it with the internal rowid number. Now I can use that file to update the States file just fine. Why is a 3 field database file acceptable in an update based on a join and a 2 field file not??? Can anyone explain this strange behavior?? ...thanks ....Bob Robert Karr Science Research Assistant Science and Technology Division Legislative Service Bureau Michigan State Legislature 124 West Allegan, 4th Floor POB 30036 Lansing, MI 48909-7536 Voice : 517-373-3028 FAX : 517-373-0171 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
