Greetings all:

I have been following posts about printing from MapInfo, including printing
to graphics files, postscript, pdf, as well as with a printer.

I have been using MI since June of this year, but have been working in GIS
for four years with other GIS software packages on other platforms with
other types of demands. Based upon the demands of my job right now, the
most important function I need of MapInfo is high-quality map creation and
output. My job demands light weight GIS analysis, but very high quality
maps.

I would like as much coherent information as possible on 1. printing to
files and printers, and 2. map layout and creation. I think I need some
feedback from others because so far I've found that MapInfo can be unwieldy
and sometimes downright painful when I try to do things like:
* Arrange map layers - I'm going to need glasses from scrolling through
layers in the layer control window.
* display labels -I have got to be missing something with this one, because
manual or automatic labeling don't work well at all for me
* Display and change colors, symbols, text, etc. - Do I put non-geographic
items in the cosmetic layer? Is it normal to be very slow to get to a fonts
and colors dialogue box?
* display highway shields - again, I'm missing something big here.
* printing to a file, to be used in Adobe PageMaker, Illustrator, Photoshop,
or Microsoft Word, usually. Creating postscript files that I can preview
when I put them in Pagemaker, etc. I'm still working through several
different, seemingly imperfect solutions with this one. I usually get the
output I need, but take too many steps to get there, I think.

I know that I am missing big pieces of information regarding the
aforementioned tasks. I am trying to put together, conceptually, the "big
picture" of map creation and output with MapInfo. I know this will take
time and effort, but my request is for any information that will help me get
over the learning curve, because after months I am not as good with MapInfo
as I would like to be.

Thanks all.
