Here is one big difference in my book: Suppose the image is an aerial photo 
and the grid is an array of township names in the PLSS. I can apply a JPeg 
transformation to the aerial photo to reduce the photo's file size, but JPeg 
the file of township names? Hardly. 

You can "zip" them both, but I doubt you could reduce the size of an 
arbitrary grid with a scheme (like JPeg) that is based on a generalization of 
visual features.
