MI Is MapBasic essentially Visual Basic?

I have intermediate skills in both MapInfo and Visual Basic.  I was wondering 
if MapBasic is similar to Visual Basic?  I am guessing it is, but maybe not.  
Does anyone know both MB and VB that can give me a comparison?
