I have just got back from installing a customised mapping system into two
sugar milling organisations (and hence the flurry of questions for the
list). We have a MapBasic program that was previously single user that is
now being used by up to 3 users at a time (some of these tables may also
be needed to be looked at by the corporate DB also). We need to be able to
have muliple users open common mapinfo tables that are currently stored in
Access. We use Access as there is a lot of additional systems scuh as
productivity reporting that hang off these data.

We had a problem for a while that if more than one user opens these tables
we get a locked table error message.

There are two levels of access that we wish to have, one is a read only
access for the initial system configuration tables stored in Access, and
then we have MapInfo map tables (data in Access) that contain polygons that
we would like to be able to at least have multiple users viewing.

I was wondering what strategies that others have used to overcome this
limitation? I am currently trying out opening the files as read only to
see if this is an option. ODBC is a possibility for the configuration
files, but I am reluctant to use it as it will more configuration on their
part and more to go wrong. Ultimately, the answer lies in Oracle spatial
I'm sure, and that is the way we are currently heading. Until then though,
I would like to go as far as possible with what is already established.

TIA
Robert.
