There still seems to be some misconceptions concerning the behavior of the
printer settings that we added for MI Pro 5.5. There were some problems
in 5.5 concerning how these changes were set but the patch that we
distributed around the first of the year fixed all of them that I am aware
of.
The question posed was --
When printing ..... the layout window will not recognise a landscape
orientation when the printer is set to landscape (it defaults to portrait).
In MI Pro now, each instance of a document window (Map, Browser, Graph,
Layout, Cartographic Legend, etc.) has their own set of printer settings.
This was one of our most highly asked for features. However, it does have
some side effects which may not be apparent and based on feedback that we
get from users, might change.
Currently, (5.5 patch) if you change the print settings for a Map Window,
for example, this has absolutely no effect on the default printer that will
be used for new or currently existing Map, Browser, Layout, etc. windows.
Existing windows are either using the default Windows printer, because no
one changed the settings either in the Print or Page Setup dialogs or via
the Set Window Printer command, OR, they did make changes and those changes
are preserved on a per window basis.
So, if you change the "printer" to landscape for the Map Window, it does
not make an existing or new Layout landscape. A new Layout will use the
default orientation for your default printer and an existing Layout will
not change. You need to effect the change on the windows that you wish
changed.
I personally have some ideas of how this could be improved but rather than
prejudice the discussion, I will, at least initially, make sure everyone
understands the current behavior and can perhaps illustrate if or why
changes might be made.
