The following is the summary of responses to my query about web based
mapping.

We are currently looking at web-mapping as well. I've developed a
pilot
application using MapExtreme NT running on Windows NT 4.0 and Active Server
Pages. If you would like to discuss this further, you can give me a call.

Here's why I think web-mapping is great:

* Very user-friendly
* All data resides on the server (Maps and database)
* All of the work is done on the server which returns information to clients
through their browser
* No software is required on the client
* Universal access to information if required (anybody can access the
server)
* Data updates are easy since only a copy of the data needs to be changed
* Links to other sites or other organisations (or your own) can easily be
implemented

Now that the internet is becoming more and more interactive with standards
like XML, Java, Javascript and DHTML it is possible to build interactive
applications very quickly. Unfortunately you cannot use MapInfo / MapBasic
when it comes to web mapping. You will have to use products such as
MapXtreme or MapXSite.
MapInfo and Mapbasic are still the best tools when it comes to have full
control over complex editing of MapInfo data, although some of that can be
accomplished using web interfaces.

In order to successfully develop a web-mapping project you need someone that
has expertise in web standards (HTML / DHTML / CSS / Javascript / XML / HTTP
/ VBScript), Server environments / programming (NTServer (IIS), ASP, LINUX,
APACHE ), Databases (SQL, ORACLE, SQL Server, MSACCESS etc.) as well as
server-side mapping software (MapXSite, MapXTreme).

You might talk to our MIS department here at VIA Metropolitan Transit.
First take a look at the interactive system map display of bus routes
and stops (you have to zoom in to see the stops), on our Web page at
http://www.viainfo.net/ and see if that's the sot of thing you are
interested in.

I am presently undertaking some experimental work to see if we should pursue
this further, and will post the results when I have something to report.
