Not to mention values like <0.1 (below detection limit). My workaround for
these has been to replace them with a value of half the detection limit.

In fact, even a blank is not the same as "null". This is a Very Big Deal to
those of us who are data-geeks.
I believe that 47.3 PhD dissertations have been written on this very topic,
with some experts believing that another 9.25 are possible before the topic
