Elliot: I don't have a definitive answer for you. In your MBX, closing a TXT file
immediately after the TAB is created may help; saving altered files after some
pre-determined number of operations or length of time, may also help.

I don't believe the problem is limited disk space or a predetermined max number of
files. Leaving the message on the screen, I've immediately checked disk space status
and found hundreds of MBs available on all disks on my system. I think the problem has
more to do with available RAM taken up by the original file and all the temporary
files created as you work.

I have noticed that MapInfo creates lots of temporary files as files are created and
edited. I think these are your real problem. When you save a file that has been
edited/changed, MapInfo eliminates the hidden, temporary files, automatically.

I have had the same message but only had a dozen or so files open. I do 3 things that
help (not necessarily in this order): 1) reduce the number of applications open to
just MapInfo, if possible; 2) save all the MapInfo layers that I can without
jeopardizing the work in progress; and 3) close files I won't need in the immediate
future.

Sometimes you're in the middle of doing something that you're not sure you really want
to "save", which will replace the original file. If the "message" pops up, do
everything you can to reduce RAM use and lower MapInfo's "internal file count". That
should then allow you the option of doing a "save copy" of the file in progress.
Revert the file in progress, close it, then open the copy and proceed. Replace the
original if the copy turns out to be the one you really want, otherwise, trash the
copy and no harm done.

As you work with files, periodically save. Good practice even if MapInfo didn't have a
self-limiting "option".

Let us know what works for you.

...good luck ...Bob
