The distance measurements of [[ 1 nm = 1.852 km ]]

the origin of the nautical mile is as follows (I believe):
1 nautical mile = 1 second of 1 minute of 1 degree at the equator
Therefore:
  the circumference of the globe = 1 nm/sec x 60s/m x 60m/d x 360 d =
1,296,000 nautical miles

I would like to pass on that the origin of an acre of land was established
by the surveyor:
A chainman (surveyor's assistant) would carry a set of 25 links of chain in
his pocket
1 LINK had a length of about 8 inches (actually 7.92", but let's not get
lost in the details)
  25 links made a ROD
  4 rods made a CHAIN (i.e. 100 links)

Setting the standard for
  10 chains by 10 chains = 10 acres
  1 chain by 10 chains = 1 acre

Now then: 16 sq. rods = 1 sq. chain = 0.1 acre
        160 sq. rods = 10 sq. chains = 1.0 acre = 100,000 sq. links
        320 sq. rods = 1 sq. mile = 640 acres
36 sq. miles = 1 township consisting of 36 sections

Now in Louisiana we have the influence of the French and they came up with
an ARPENT which is about an acre approximately ( 0.84625 acres = 1 arpent in
Louisiana) In Missouri it is 0.8570 acre.

Finally the areas along the Mississippi river, with all of its plantations,
were laid out, along a 40 arpent and an 80 arpent line from the river. This
was an area that could be maintained agriculturally by the plantation's
staff.

I thought these items might be of interest with all the other discussions
gibing on about distance measurements
