WOW!!
the responses is immediate and never-ending
Thanks a lot
My Original question was to find a way to translate from Shape to MIF
(ArcView to MapInfo). I am working with MapInfo 4 at the moment but
obviously, I need to upgrade.
The responses:

You don't want to work with MID/MIFs in Mapinfo. This is an export format,
like an Arc Export file (e00), not a native format. The native MapInfo
format is a TAB file. There is a built-in translator that will translate
TABs to Shape files and vice versa. It's called the Universal Translator,
and can be accessed under the Tools menu.

There might be a better script, but the Universal Translator will do that
for you.

MapInfo comes with a tool called the Universal Translator which will
translate Shape files to MapInfo TAB files automatically. If they are all
the same projection, you can select a number of shp files and convert them
all at once.

Check under the Tools menu. Already loaded as a default is
shape--->MI/MI--->shape tool.

That's not needed since MapInfo comes with Universal Translator,
which handles Shapefiles, and ArcLink which translates ArcINFO
Export files (*.E00). Look under your Tools menu for them.

If your using MI Pro.. the Universal Translator in the Tools menu should
work for you..

That's not entirely correct. Some way to "translate" project file object
styles to MI objects and vice-versa would be nice.

That's only the case if you are using a newer version of MapInfo, otherwise
Wessex has a free DOS shp2mif translator on their website under
Support>Utilities. From there, you're home free.

Here it begins to stray from the original path

I have been working to find a way to read ESRI tif/tfw pairs into Mapinfo
and they do not work correctly without painstaking manual reference points.
They read directly into many other packages but not MapInfo. It would be
very fortunate if MapInfo made this capability part of their "Universal
Translator" instead of a third-party MapBasic add-on that does not work and
is not even supported.

It would indeed be useful, Dennis, if tfw/jgw translations were available in
MapInfo in the first place. However, until such a time I have found the tool
"worldreg.mbx" is brilliant at translating multiple shape-tifs and jpgs,
very rapidly, and very accurately, into MI tabs. The price (about US$70) is
well worth it to avoid hours/days of heartache, and it's available from a
guy called Tony via http://members.aol.com/MapData/wrv3.html
