Neil,

Before I start let me state that I'm not an "ESRI-ite". However, I'm still
very puzzled about your comments. Are you saying that you would rather
develop in a proprietary language (MapBasic) instead of any standard
development language of your choice (VB, Delphi, C, C++)? And before you
think it, I have programmed "Intergrated Mapping" Apps with MapInfo & VB.
You know what, it's a complete hack. Haven't you ever thought how nice it
would be if MapInfo was written in MapX? I personally give ESRI a lot of
credit for having the balls to radically change their software. It's true
that you will probably have to rewrite your Avenue code, but in my mind the
trade off of rewritting some code vs the benefits of a 100% COM based
technology are well worth it.

Everyone at MapInfo is always taunting their connection with the Oracle 8i
spatial cartridge. FYI, other GISs support it also. The next release of
GeoMedia and the rumor mill has it that the next version of Transcad (thus
probably also the next version of Maptitude) will have support for Oracle 8i
spatial cartridge. By the end of this year ESRI will more than likely
support 8i spatial without the need for SDE.

One more point. I don't really think that people complain about the MapInfo
upgrade costs...they complain that there is nothing very useful in the
upgrades. When ArcView 8 comes out I'm thinking of switching...and you know
what I'm sure I'm not the only one.
