You are right, it does not work ... But there are several ways around, i.e. :

use the table / update column function to add any of the attributes of the buffers 
using  "contains" as join specification; this will add a temporary column with the 
value of the buffer attribute. After that do a select on all in the temporary column 
that have value "0".
