To listers,
I think there is quite a big mis-understanding about Taiwan.
I am graduated from National Taiwan University and working in
GIS field in Hong Kong.
Taiwan is not a military state now and millions of Taiwan people
elected their new President this year. The change of ruling party
was peacefully this summer.
Another lister said that digital map is under the control of military.
Though I think the military people have some security check but
digital map are available to civilian usage through application.
At present, Taiwan digital map data are being sold by a Government
department and also some local private companies selling their
own stuff. Civilian use is okay locally but I heard that there is export
control for large scale maps at certain precision.
I spent an hour trying to connect to the Government web site and
to the National Taiwan University web site but the lines are
so busy. But most of the sites are in Chinese only so you will
be hard to understand.
I hope there will be some words from relevant academic or official
people from Taiwan in the near future about digital map
selling and export control.

What you are looking for is a Military State Secret. Export of such large-
scale maps and topographic information is treason in the Republic of Taiwan. I
would think it unlikely that you will be able to access such data, even while
"in-country." Smaller-scale topographic maps for tourist hiking purposes in
the mountains has been reported to have passed the military map censors.
This is normal behavior for a country with recent border conflicts, and/or
blood spilled in the past few generations, and/or with a major nuclear power
(with missles) next door that tends to rattle sabers.

I am looking for latest maps of Taiwan generated from 1:50,000 scale base maps (
preferably). I also need the contour data. Even paper maps will also do, if any
body knows of a source. any pointers?
