For such operations we use FME (http://www.safe.com) and the built-in "Proximity
Factory" (Neighbour Finder). It can find the nearest objects to any others, including
distance calculation and work directly on MapInfo TAB files. However, FME is a
commercial product. You find an example of the Neighbour Finder on:
