Hello Listers,
Well Manifold does not produce thematic maps the way MapInfo does it, so it
can not possibly replace old good MapInfo. It's rather an extremely
powerful GIS / spatial <<analysis>> add-on to MapInfo (as well as to
ArcView etc.). And their 3d visualisation stuff is cool too.
Up till now, I was deliberately deleting all messages about printing from
MapInfo. Now I have to produce a poster-size map from MapInfo and regret
it. Can anyone offer any suggestions for professional [vector] output from
MapInfo? Avenza's MapPublisher seems to do the job, but I recently noticed
small notes on the website stating incompatibility of the most recent
versions of MapPublisher and Illustrator / Freehand, the major host
programs. Something to think about, given that upgrades to any subsequent
versions from any of the parties (Avenza itself, Adobe and Macromedia)
aren't cheap.
The only option so far seems to be exporting MapInfo layers to dxf. Or
converting everything from MapInfo to ArcView and exporting layers as Adobe
Illustrator .ai files (very handy option in ArcView). However, in any case
the attributes and formatting/design are lost by the time they reach any
DTP program.
Also, I tried printing from MapInfo to PDF - the output is raster, not vector.
Any plug-in for Corel from MapInfo? Corel may be worse than Adobe packages,
but it seems to have a decent vector output and the cost of upgrading to
Corel 9 Graphics Suite (Draw and PhotoPaint and many more) is several times
cheaper ($200 US) than buying or even upgrading Adobe Illustrator or Adobe
Photoshop alone. And Corel offers competitive upgrades, Adobe does not.
Does anyone know any other program (other than ArcView) that produces
professional output from the layout and can eat MapInfo files? Any suggestions?
Gleb.
