We find the ECW compression utility to be the one the best mapping tool innovation to come along in a while.
We've presently starting a forest inventory mapping project for which we will be producing over 2000 orthophotos using PCI OrthoEngine. The ortho outputs are produced in tif/twf format which are then compressed at 1:20 using the FREE ECW compression utility. The results go from 20 meg to under 1meg per photo.
We made accuracy/quality checks. The results are more then acceptable.

Unfortunately MapInfo does not read the geocoded information within the ECW. So re-registering 2000 ECW files within MapInfo was out of the question.

Can anyone confirm this? We also tried the MapImagery add-on without any luck.

Also because MapInfo does not offer Stream Mode Digitizing we had to look at using ArcView which allows full stream mode digitzing capabilities and automatic snapping features. Oh yes, Arcview also reads the geocoded information from the ECW file like a charm.

ArcView also can curve text along features. But that is another issue.
