You are correct; MI does not read the georeferencing info in the ECW file.

I have a free utility on my web site (URL below) that will create TAB files
from TFW files. Unfortunately, the TAB file will reference a *.TIF file
rather the *.ECW file. You can manually edit the TAB file, or use the
excellent Search+ tool found at http://www.spatialplus.com/ to change
references from *.TAB to *.ECW.
