Hello Fellow Mappers,
Can someone out there point to some data that I could quickly use
with MapInfo to create general background maps at the county
level. I would be overlaying my set of points and their 4-digit
labels over this map, and each map would contain anywhere from 2
to 10 of my points. I would like the data used for the county
map background to give me towns/cities, major hydrology,
highways, and maybe topo lines. The biggest problem with the data
I already have is that the places (towns) layer is in one table
per region, so I can't distinguish whether it's a big city or
small town. This is quite frustrating because I obviously want
to represent a larger place with a different symbol and label
than a small town. It would also be nice if the highways could
be labeled with a number over a shield rather than just a text
label. And I'd like the data to be organized by state and county.
I would be saving each map at about a size of 400 x 400 pixels in
GIF format.
Maybe this is asking too much, but I'd like to end up with a map
background that's reasonably aesthetic in appearance that
includes my points as well. Every map is for some different web
page. For now, they need to be static maps, because we won't be
ready for a while to move to a mapping server.
For the last round of maps I created for these static web pages I
used a CGI script I wrote to request maps from the U.S. Census
Tiger Map Server. There is (or should I say was) this feature
where you can use their server to read a file of points on your
web server and they would deliver a map in your browser with your
points overlaid on it. This feature, however, just doesn't seem
to function in the last month or so. I'm starting to conclude
that they're not supporting it any longer.
I know there's a plethora of vendors selling data, map viewers
and internet mapping servers. Either they're way too expensive
or too cumbersome to use. Or maybe I'm just uniformed about
what's available. All I really want at the moment is some data
to use within MapInfo to generate the static maps for the web
site, not a full-blown mapping server ($$).
Any suggestions or ideas are greatly welcomed.
Regards,
Alice
