Hope I have answered your questions.  I think the origin of NMEA goes back 20 or more years, the protocol was set up to allow marine nav systems to talk to autopilots and other electronics. 
Have you used the GPS interface for MapInfo (Blue Marble Geographic Tracker), I use when I go on a field trip to navigate our assets.  I have recently arranged a tablet computer to set up as a field navigation aid with MapInfo running on windows98, ideally, I want to use a palm/windowsCE device for field use.
