Hi
I'm using MapInfo V5.5 and I'm trying to do a style override on a symbol. I
wish to keep the same orientation as already exists for these symbols. Is
this possible?

cheers

Subject: MI-L Workspace Appearance on Other Machines

Firstly, many thanks to Bill Thoen for helping us locate a problem with our
email routing which precluded us from receiving the list. With his
assistance we were able to track the source of the problem and I'm glad to
be back up and running.

Here's my problem-

I've created 1,200+ workspaces on my machine. My machine resolution is set
to 1280 x 1024. In MI my tool bars are on the right side of the window. I
have used the maximum space available in the window to create the workspace
and the subsequent layout view. Many other network users now want to use
the workspaces but, for the most part, their screen resolutions are
something less than mine. Upon opening the workspace on any one of these
machines (which, for an added twist, have their tool bars loaded at the top
of the window) much of the view is outside their screen's ability to see
without scrolling. As a result the layout is cropped to the viewable size
of the user's max window. I have tried setting the aspect window ratio in
the MI preferences system settings. It works but it distorts the map and,
more importantly, many of the users have minimal MI skills to begin with and
some are using Proviewer which doesn't allow this alteration to the settings
so far as I know.!
By the way, all of the users have the same 21 inch monitor so I don't
have the problem of adjusting for 15, 17, 19 etc - just resolution, or so it
would seem. Suggestions or solutions appreciated!

Hi,

I know that in MapXtreme Java Edition, it is not easy to edit objects.
Here, we built some code to edit point where there X and Y coordinates
are stored in a RDBMS.
The same can be done with all type of objects if you use Oracle8i.
http://dynamo.mapinfo.com/products/web/Features.cfm?ProductID=162#Read/Write
Tool

With MapXtreme NT, the specs seems to talk about the creation and
edition of objects:
http://dynamo.mapinfo.com/products/web/Features.cfm?ProductID=101#Object
Editing
but for "Developer"! and what about the end-user?

The best tool remains MapInfo Pro.
If the users or power users of your application also have MapInfo Pro,
they can edit the native MapInfo table there and update the table of the
geoset (if you dont change the structure).
We have a product working with MapXtreme Java Edition that allows
MapInfo Pro users to remotely, via the web, publish and update workspace
that then affect the geoset and the related tables. It an easy way to
modify geoset, but with your favorite tool, MapInfo Pro!

You can see the product at : http://www.pushnsee.com

Two possibilities that I can think of. 1. If you have MI on more than one
computer, different monitor sizes can hide the info tool on smaller
monitors. I have a 19 inch monitor. If I move the info tool to the bottom
of my screen and save the workspace. Then a co-worker opens the workspace
with a 17 inch monitor, the co-worker is not able to see the info tool. I
have to reopen the workspace and move the info tool to the middle of the
screen and then they can see it when they open it. 2. You may have
inadvertently moved it down to the bottom of your screen before. Try
pulling down your windows task bar so it cannot be seen and your info tool
may be hiding there. You may also need to make the tool bars floating to
get a larger screen in MI. Hope this solves your problem.

I think you are wrong, annotation are not tied to a particular map layer. An
annotation layer is something like a cosmetic layer in MapInfo, no direct
relation with a tab file. Edition of informations (objects) in an annotation
layer can't result in modification in tab file (i.e. map, dat, or tab) of any
layer. But maybe it's ok for the question's sender..

Bien sur il nya aucune relation entre Annotation Layer et le dossier TAB.
mais..

ofcourse there is no particular relation between an annot layer and a tab.
but the only editable layer (if you are working localy with TABs)
is annotation layer. In order to edit a particular tab you must select
records
from TAB and edit them in the annot layer. This will not result a change in
the TAB file. By the way, you can use unlimited anotation layer, there is no
limit.

Alberto,

Move the cursor into the map window, click the right mouse button (if you
are using a right-handed Windows set-up), and a menu will appear. Select
'View Entire Layer' and then select which layer you wish to see the extents
of. Then pick OK.

Yunha,

The simplest explanantion would be that you don't have any attribute data
attached to the object you are actually using the tool on, so the info
window doesn't appear. However there could be another reason:

Sometimes if you are using another application on top of MapInfo or have
opened a workspace which was created on a machine with a monitor that has a
higher desktop area (screen resolution) than yours, the info window can be
shown in a place which is actually off the edge of your screen.

To re-position the info window to a place where it will be visible to you,
open the mapBasic window in MapInfo and type the following statement:

Set Window Info Position(1,1)

This statement should position the info window 1 inch from the top and one
inch from the left hand side of your screen. The try the info tool again.

This may not be the problem but it is worth a try.

Steve...............

Hello.

Can anyone point me to a low cost or free tool to aid in some very simple

represent a floor plan (cubes, offices, etc.) and be able to associate data
elements (cube #, occupant, work group) to that object and be able to shade
those objects thematically.

Alberto,
Right mouse click in the 'map' window and select View entire layer, a
dropdown menu allows you to choose which layer to zoom to.

Alternatively I have just uploaded a 'window' tool to the directionsmag site
that will 'zoom to extents' on all open map windows. You could possibly get
someone to code a tool 'button' to do the same if you wish...(it would look
a bit 'arcview'-like)

The application also includes a tool for finding those pesky info windows
when they suddenly dissappear and wont show (Sorry buy I forgot to reply to
the lister who asked about those yesterday (?)), and I've also tacked on a
"follow me" option, for centring windows on the active map. There are
alternatives for these tools on the site, I just couldnt remember what they
are called, so apologies in advance if they have duplicate functionality.

Some of the commercial printers have disk drives. Instead of producing a
map on your HP, you save the print into a file that can be loaded into the
commercial type printer and mass produce maps. I did not like the final
product when we tried it. Sometimes the header or footer was cut off or the
whole layout would shift and not be centered on the page. My company ended
up using a color LaserJet for my department. One note: the cost of
producing so many hard copies of color maps has been adding up so now we are
shifting towards PDF files using Adobe Acrobat. We are very pleased with
the quality of the maps produced in PDF format.

Hello people..
I'm printing my maps on a HP450c

My question is: what's the function of "print to file" when I select
the "print" function..
How can I use it?

Thanks.

Subject: MI-L MI SUM Error: Overflow

Thanks to Russ Lawley and Anitra Robinson for their help with my overflow
error. The error seems to stem from performing the join on columns, one of
which was Integer and the other Small Integer.

Russel Lawley wrote:
this is fairly common, so I agree...where's the @~#*£%$" help notes!. It
happens if your table 'join' generates big numbers during "sum" operations
and your table columns are only set up for "small" numbers. i.e., one of the
columns is made of "Small integer" and the join results in the column
having values in excess of 32,0000 (give or take a few).

Subject: MI-L MB/Delphi DLL - Passing user-type parameters by reference

Hi list,

I'm trying to pass a user-defined-type parameter (by reference) from a
Mapbasic6 app to a Delphi4 DLL, then make changes to the values of the
parameter in the DLL, and be able to see the changes back in my MB app.

I'm passing the parameter by-reference but still can't see the value changes
back inside the MB app.

Are there limitations on user type parameters - as far as passing them
by-ref goes?

Any ideas or work-arounds would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Subject: MI-L MI: window size and paper unit size.

I have seen several messages relating to wor saved in a screen size and
displayed in another one. That made be think about the relationship that can
exist between screen size and the "paper unit" size as displayed on screen.

There is no doubt that a "one inch paper unit" does not measure one inch on
the screen. How do screen size (and screen definition, incidentally) affect
that "value"?

Maybe the 'plane' should be 'plan' and Alberto requires assistance with
Georeferencing or combining the tabular data with the graphics ?
Try running your answers through the English to Spanish translator and then
back to English and see how different it is from what you wrote.
