MI-L Standard cartographic map symbol/legend definition/ list?

Hi,  I've just imported a significant amount of New Zealand topographical data into MapInfo from ESRI, but all the point features are black stars, lines features black lines etc.  Is there a downloadable document/list/description for the cartographic representation of map features?  International?  Australian or New Zealand-ish?  I'd prefer to use recognisable symbols instead of choosing my own at whim   Thanks,   Michelle Smith
