I fully support Caroline's comments below about GeoBasemap Mapping Systems
software.
I can do most of my work in half the time using this add-on product.
The scaled output option is the one I use the most, but the other plotting
tool options are great time savers too:
Being able to create stand alone scale bar windows (out of the main mapper);
Legend windows that are not directly linked to a thematic map; and
Grids (graticules) in any projection are just a few of the great advantages
the guys at Exa-Min have provided.
Their other product GeoBasemap Display Tools answered the question about
creating your own vector fill patterns that was on the list a couple of
weeks ago.
For just over AUS$1000 you get a product which saves you hours and hours of
work.

There are several third party programs to do this, the ones I know
are
GeoBasemap Mapping System and Discover. They are both excellent, but
GeoBasemap is the cheaper of the two, and
is probably more useful to you (Discover was written specifically
for
geologists). It allows you to set the paper size, then the scale,
and draws
a box around the area on your map window which will fit on the
sheet. Then
it changes the map window to fit the box and hey presto, your map is
to
scale. It has loads of other useful functions too.
