This is not unique to MapInfo but to Outlook as well - when Outlook2000 is
working email nothing else is allowed to operate and if you are connected
via a slow VPN.... well I too can relate to your frustration.

To add some folk-lore, I can sort of remember that way back when MapInfo
decided to get their MS Windows Logo (Vers 3.x?) that Troy Pro developers
were quite angry(?) at having to add into Professional code the ability to
send and receive emails from inside Professional. Given MapInfo seems to
have dropped the "logo" thing for 98 and ME it must be legacy? My personal
opinion and bet is the necessary MS design requirements for "logo" had a
"worm" philosophy that email and therefore IE was part and parcel of the OS.
SO I'll guess we just need to thank Bill on this foresight... What this may
mean for the pending WIN2000 (and .NET?) MI logoizations (post anti-trust)
is yet to be tested?

Ok, I have a question. How are MapInfo and your web browser
connected? I have a strange problem with MapInfo and Internet Explorer
interacting in some weird way..........
