Harper,

To get your State to appear to fill the whole of the layout you need to do
two things. Firstly, stretch the frame for the map to fill the desired
area, then go to your map window containing the state. Zoom in to the
state, your changes in zoom level will be reflected in the layout. The
frame on the layout is a dynamic placeholder for your map - therefore any
changes made in the map window will automatically be reflected in the
layout.

The second part of your problem can be solved by the following. Select the
county you want to "cut" out using the select tool (the arrow pointer), then
go to File > Save Copy As.. in the box that appears select to save
"Selection". Give it a name and location to save to in the save dialog.
Then open the file you just saved. In the map window you wish to add the
county to you need to right click your mouse and select the layer control
option. Then click the add layer button and select your county file from
the list, then move the layer so that it is the bottom most layer - all the
other layers will be on top of the county layer and therefore not obscured.

If you want to simply cut the data that is within the county boundary from
the main database and zip files then you would need to use SQL select (the
manual will tell you how to do this!)

Hope this helps

Hello, MapInfo-L,

I am a brand spanking new user of MapInfo. I am facing a tight deadline (we
bought MapInfo specifically for this project) and am still behind the
learning curve. What I'd like to know is how to make my map image bigger in
the Layout window so the state will "take up" the whole letter sized page.
I'd also like to know how to "cut" a county from a map and paste in a
different map window, but would like to have the data from the MapInfo ZIP
table and my own database information tables and the buffer zones set up
around zips appear within the county boundary. Do I use the SQL function for
that?

I apologize for posting the question--no doubt with more use this would
become evident. I've checked the MapInfo-L archives, the Help file, the
manual, and have done the tutorial. There has to be something I'm
overlooking, and my deadline is LOOMING.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.
Sincerely,
Harper
