Pardon me? Did not Bill Thoen post a message a few days ago asking why
nobody was doing the obvious--using their GIS to solve the problem? And
have we not witnessed numerous clever attempts to solve the problem without
any use of the numerical data? It seems more a case of a community
reluctant to use its hammers when presented with two boards and a bag of nails.
That is a very telling circumstance, I think, and speaks to some
fundamental limitations of the software and its use. (As an ArcView user,
I hasten to add that ArcView has the same glaring limitations as MapInfo in
generating large accurate buffers and in crossing the +- 180 degree
meridians or poles. Apparently the brave new ArcGIS 8.1 technology cannot
handle this problem either.)
And so what if it's a trick question? The point of many of Vos Savant's
puzzles is that their solutions depend on the assumptions one
adopts. There is unlikely to be one "right" answer to this one,
either. (But there are definitely many wrong ones!)
