MapInfo 6 is the first version where the 'Grid' thematic has actually worked
for me, using an inverse distance weighting algorithm. Seems to work quite
nicely if IDW suits your purpose. I think Vertical Mapper offers a number
of other methods of creating continuous surfaces, such as triangulation with
smoothing, but at not inconsiderable cost. There are some add in products
that will let you play with kernel density estimation as a surface creation
method. If you are interested I'll dig out the references.
