We use the network version of MapInfo at Pioneer. The network license is
sold in groups of three. A single three-pack allows up to 3 simultaneous
users. We have many users but most are just occasional. Therefore, having
several 3-packs saves us quite a bit on licensing. For our heavy users
(those who use it more than once a week) we have purchased individual copes
of MI.
There are some things to note about having a network license:
Depending on server load and network traffic, there can be a performance
hit. This is especially noticeable when the program initially loads.
Some things cannot be done with a network install. For example, custom
symbols are not available.
The software does not track how many users are running, therefore it is up
to you to monitor this.
You need to set up a directory structure on the client's PC for THMTMPLT,
TOOLS, etc. and transfer the proper files. Also you need to be sure each
client sets their preferences to point to those directories. For example,
accessing the Thmtplt directory on the server causes all sorts of headaches.

Is it possible to put MapInfo on the network? Is there a network version
available? I'll explain my question with an example. E.g. I bought 30
licenses for MapInfo and I want to give 10 people usage rights to log on
unconditionally and 50 people who get rights to log on based on first serve
first come.
The users that log on unconditionally use the package every day and can't
work without it.
The users that log on based on first serve first come.
When this is indeed possible, I hope you can share the experiences on doing
it this way. Are there special IT solutions needed then?
