In MI Pro 6.0, we added new functionality to Clip Region which allows
Windows to perform the clip region operation. Previous to that, the Erase
Outside operator was used internally to produce the clip region result.
Among the advantages of the new Windows-based Clip Region functionality is
a substantial speed improvement in many cases. It also can clip objects
that were not possible using the Erase Outside method (such as Text objects
and labels). One of the disadvantages of the Windows-based Clip Region
functionality, is that the size of Metafiles produced increases. You
should be able to see this if you do a "File > Save Window As", and pick
either the Windows Metafile (*.wmf) or WIndows Enhanced Metafile (*.emf)
with the Clip Region enabled.

There are a couple of things that I would suggest trying. One is to print
using the direct to device method. Pick "File > Print", and then press the
Advanced button. Make sure the "Print Direct to Device" radio button is
selected. I think this should send the data to the printer, and allow the
printer to perform the clip region operation. This may reduce the size of
the spool file to some extent.

The other option is to use the older, Erase Outside functionality for the
Clip Region. This can be done through "Map > Options..." and picking the
Erase Outside radio button in the Apply Clip Region Using box. This will
increase the amount of time used to calculate the clip region, and text and
points will be clipped slightly differently. The performance difference
will depend on the complexity of the clip object and the complexity of the
map. But once clipped, the resulting Metafile should be smaller, and the
print spool file should be smaller.

I am using the clip region to focus on a particular location of a map.
The problem is that I want the clip region colour to be a light yellow,
not the white default colour. Is it possible to change the clip region
colour?

TIA

I found the answer by setting the region style colour in the layout
window.
My next question is when printing the map in post script, the file size
is huge when the clip region is applied (over 100MB and counting). When
the clip region is not applied, the plot file size is 19MB. Is this to
be expected? Is there some option that must be checked off or on in MI
6.5?
