Dave: It just imports them, doesn't really support them as you might think (i.e. can't do routing, other stuff like you can with built-in MapPoint data). Also, this is just a 'developer sample' and not everything works or was intended to work, as far as supporting 'importing', this is nothing new, there's always been the AddPushPin method, what MapPoint 2002 (out since April) added was just more Add* methods including Line, Polyline, Shape, Textbox.
Anyway, expect a related article to appear on MSDN and extensive coverage on the MP2K Magazine ( http://www.mp2kmag.com ).
