I have a partial answer to my quest: the icon editors I tested (Icon Editor Pro and IconCool Editor) have both the good idea to save a newly designed Icon in true colors even if a 16 or 256 color palette was specified for the drawing. And that MI will not take. And I trusted those programs; only this morning did I have the idea of checking the files they produce.
The difference in the BMP files was due to the BMP way of the storing the pixel colors, different according to the color palette size.
