I have a partial answer to my quest: the icon editors I tested (Icon Editor
Pro and IconCool Editor) have both the good idea to save a newly designed
Icon in true colors even if a 16 or 256 color palette was specified for the
drawing. And that MI will not take. And I trusted those programs; only this
morning did I have the idea of checking the files they produce.

The difference in the BMP files was due to the BMP way of the storing the
pixel colors, different according to the color palette size.

My thanks to all, particularly to David Reid who pointed me to

for some useful graphiic file information.

Subject: MI-L bmp formats for custom symbols

There must certainly several bmp formats around, even if they are all called
"Windows Bitmap" and that could be the cause of some complaints about
symbols not being recognized by MI even if all the specs are closely
satisfied.

My hint comes from using 2 programs to generate symbols, specifically LView
Pro and Icon Editor, one commercial and the other shareware. I have no
problems with LView, but with Icon Editor, if I save the design as BMP
bitmap, MI does not recognize it. And if I look at the contents of the 2
bmp, it is obvious that they do not have the same contents even if the
design is exactly the same.

I would apprciate confirmation that there are indeed several bmp formats and
that MI does not recognize all of them.
