If you open the .JPG (file --> open table --> file type = 'raster image')
MapInfo will create an associated .TAB file for it. Make sure you save the
.TAB file in the same projection as your map if you want to include it in
the map window. Otherwise you can get some fantastic looking (but not very
useful) distortions.

This will work with most img files.
