This is a gap in MI products but I'm not sure how important it is - perhaps the list could comment? Do people use metadata now or is it one for future 'interoperability'? Certainly SEEMS like a good and simple idea.
MapBasic has some routines to allow storing of metadata in the ASCII text TAB files - the data is stored against defined keys, as many or few as you want. So in a MapBasic app (or integrated mapping app) you can use these functions to store or retrieve as much info as you want. Eg source, comment, copyright, last edited date/user, version etc. In MapX theres nothing but its easy enough to code some text editing routines to work with the TAB file. BUT - nothing from the standard MI Pro interface, which seems odd. Also, no conformance to international metadata standards (eg a standard set of built-in keys and a tool to read/write them). I've no idea what these standards are, but ESRI make a big song and dance about them. This usually means they wrote them :-) Paul Crisp Syntegra Direct: 0191 461 4522 Mobile: 0776 414 3762 Fax: (0191) 461 1959 Innovation Place Metro Riverside Park Delta Bank Road Gateshead Tyne & Wear NE11 9DJ -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 28 November 2001 15:24 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: MI-L MapInfo Metadata Hello Is there a way to create metadata for MapInfo files? Some newer versions of ESRI's products and Adobe allow users to input attribute metadata like author, time, origin etc.. of the data. It basically attaches a small file to the main file. Does MapInfo have that ability? Thank you Ethan M. Gomberg City GIS, City of Orlando -Engineering Bureau 400 S.
