Standard tools for this job are:
Microsoft Visio (top end edition with database capability)
ER/Win Now owned by Computer Associates, I think; used to
be Platinum Software
Rational Suite www.rational.com
I've used the first two. I'm currently using Visio because it's bundled
with my MSDN subscription and seems to get the job done. I'm not satisfied
with it's data dictionary / reporting tools, though. I have a very specific
format that I want for the documentation and I can't get that from Visio.
I'd rather be able to export to or link to MS Access where I can write my
own reports.
Both tools I've used can reverse engineer and generate Access databases (as
well as "big" servers).
Visio is used to create and document ArcInfo geodatabases (for version 8)...
However Microsoft has broken this approach in their latest version of Visio
and ESRI has not announced how they are going to fix it.
Hardly a complete analysis (!) ... Hope this helps.

Subject: MI-L Entity relation modeling tool
I am theorizing, some ones might say dreaming, others designing, an =
application for servicing the different need of a medium, typical, = rural,
chilean municipality (local government).
The entity-relation-variables model is getting a bit huge and =
unmanageable. Around 200 - 500 - 12000 of each in the same order.
I am wondering if there is any tool, propably graphycal, that will allow =
me to draw the model. Much in the chemical/biochemical 3d model, I am on =
the idea of a black/white or for the cause any color three dimensional =
empty space, where I can put bubbles (entities) and lines (relations) =
connecting them, inside the bubbles live the variables and the relations =
cross the bubble container touching the variable or fields. If I can =
define by color/shape the entities-relations-variables caracteristics, = and
latter have a print out with the entities/relations/variables = documenting
the model much better.
Any one of you know of a such a beauty? Is there any tool for helping =
designing databases rather than plain paper and ink?
TIA
Juanse Barros
