Matthew- You can alter the .gif in paint so that the symbol is square. Open the .gif in paint and choose image>attribute and resize the image's width and/or height. You can then re-center the object by using the rectangular select tool. Then save the reworked symbol into the custom symbol folder as a 256 color bitmap.
