Chris: Don't know if this is the problem, but check the bounds on the tables involved. 
The larger the Minimum Boundary Rectangle (MBR), the less precision. 

There may be other ways to find the MBR for a table, but if you export it as a 
MID/MIF, then open the MIF in a text editor, you can see the Bounds Clause, if it has 
one.  If it doesn't, MapInfo still imposes default bounds (not listed in the MIF), 
sometimes much larger than anything that makes sense. You may want to manually add a 
reasonable Bounds Clause then re-import the MIF.
