Dear MapX Developers

As a MapX developer I have encountered a number of problems with MapX,
MapXtreme/NT, MapMarker Australia 1.0 and MapXMobile that are driving me
nuts. My software development network is
* a single (web server/ app development) PC with Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
OS with PWS 4.0 upgraded through SP6 and
* a single (web browse/ app testing) PC with Windows 98.

Prior to contacting MapInfo Tech Support I wish to make a final sanity
check.

If anybody has experienced any of the following difficulties (P1, P2, P3)
then please let me know.

Here's one of the sequence of events that's been causing me grief.

1. install MapX 4.5 SDK (MapX 4.50.78)

2. develop and distribute to clients various VB/MapX and Access 97/MapX apps
along with MapX runtime installers.

3. install MapXtreme NT 2.5 (MapX 4.50.88)

********************
P1. If I now update and re-distribute a VB/MapX or Access/MapX app then it
fails at the client site with errors reporting incompatible versions of
MapX.
********************

4. develop various MapXtreme/NT ASP/MapX web servers apps.

5. install MapMarker for Australia 1.0 (MapX 3!)

********************
P2. MapX4 Geoset Manager fails with the error message "Error accessing the
insertion tools from the map" followed by a Dr Watson crash. VB/MapX 4
and Access/MapX 4 won't run. MapXtreme/NT 2.5 server-side code hangs up.
********************

6. uninstall MapMarker for Australia , clean up remnant directories and
registry entries, uninstall MapXtreme, clean up remnant directories and
registry entries, reinstall MapXtreme, re-validate VB/MapX, Access/MapX and
ASP/MapX apps.

7. install MapX Mobile Beta JAN 2002 (MapX 5)

********************
P3. MapX4 Geoset Manager fails. VB/MapX 4 and Access/MapX 4 apps won't run.
MapXtreme/NT 2.5 server-side code hangs up.
********************

8. uninstall MapX Mobile , clean up remnant directories and registry
entries, uninstall MapXtreme, clean up remnant directories and registry
entries, reinstall MapXtreme, re-validate VB/MapX, Access/MapX and ASP/MapX
apps.

9. normal service is restored but forget MapMarker for Australia or
MapXMobile development :o(

The main problem seems to be a flaw in the MapX installer design, namely
that installers for each version indiscriminately place key EXE and DLL
files in C:\Program Files\ Common Files\MapXCommon silently overwriting
existing files.

I undertake to summarise any MAPINFO-L responses and submit a consolidated
report to MapInfo Tech Support.
