We've done some stuff with printing raster images to Adobe Acrobat Distiller and pdf Writer - creating the pdfs and them printing them through acrobat - this seems to work pretty well and gives an excellent print quality. Alternatively there is a piece of software called MapPublisher which allows you to import shape and mif files into graphics layouts as maps and print that way - i don't think it's too expensive
