Copyright: The right to copy. Copyright means that an owner of a work is the only
person who may copy this work or permit someone else to do so. It generally includes
the sole right to publish, produce, reproduce and to perform a work in public.
Copyright applies to all original literary works, including computer programs,
dramatic works, musical works, and artistic works, including conventional and digital
maps and related images. Under terms of the Berne Convention, copyright is automatic,
and although no registration is required in Canada, it is recommended, as the
certificate issued upon registration may be used in court to subsequently establish
ownership should the need arise. Registration is required for copyright protection
outside of Canada.

Intellectual Property: Intellectual property (IP) is information that may be protected
by law, that is useful and transferable, that is controlled by someone and that is
deemed to have commercial value and, hence, is an asset.

Intellectual property encompasses the products of human intellect, including
inventions and technical information. It includes inventions, some of which are
protected by patents, and industrial designs protected by registration. It includes
software and other texts and graphics, which are protected through the law of
copyright. It includes identifying images and words, which are protected through the
law of trademarks. It also includes trade secrets and know-how, which are controlled
through secrecy with the support of the common law of trade secrets and confidential
information. Technology in the public domain is not, and cannot be, intellectual
property.

Intellectual property is "owned" by whoever created it, usually an inventor, an
author, or an originator of such information, unless there are contractual obligations.
