Keith, Mike, List:
MapInfo 6.5 & 7.0 should look first to see if its a GeoTiff (registration
info embedded in image header itself) then if not, look for a 'world' file
in same location as image (*.tfw). If it finds a world file, it will
prompt you for the projection to select. This is the kicker when working
with world files...
You need to know the EXACT projection & its parameters that were used with
the registered image because this info is not stored in the world file, and
that projection must be in the mapinfow.prj file to select from, if not
already there, in order to register the image correctly. Look for metadata
with this image, if any is available, and compare it to the same projection
entry in the mapinfow.prj file to use it or create a custom one if need be.
When you select the appropriate projection from the Choose Projection
picker, MapInfo then takes the values from the world file to calculate and
create control point values based on the projection and its parameters you
selected.
If MapInfo finds neither GeoTiff info or an associated world file with the
image, then it treats it as a normal raster and you can either just display
it with dummy coordinates, or manually register it.
* FYI, In 7.0 if you use the same projection for all your projects, you can
set the Default Table Projection Preference and that will be what comes up
as a default choice when creating a new table, registering an image, etc.,
so you don't have to keep scrolling through the Projection picker dialog to
select the same entry when registering multiple images, its set by default
when using that preference.

-Bill

MI-L RE: GeoTiff in MapInfo 7.0
Mike,
Just open the tiff file from the File Open command (select Raster file
format from the 'Files of Type' picklist of course). MI will open the file
and georeference it automatically if a tfw exists. BTW MI 6.5 will do the
same.

Keith

Subject: MI-L RE: GeoTiff in MapInfo 7.0
Hi all,
I have some tfw files that are associated with tiff images. I have just
installed MapInfo 7.0 beacuse it is supposed to enable me to view these
GeoTiff with going through the process of georeferencing. Can someone out
there give me some guidance as to what the process is please? Have read the
MapInfo User guide but this is not helping much
Thanks
